**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Thanks to Gilt City, last week I had the pleasure of seeing an advanced screening of Magic Mike. I have never been the type of girl who enjoys male strip clubs or reading Playgirl. Actually, come to think of it, I have never participated in either. But, that didn't stop me from enjoying this movie.
The movie follows a young entrepreneur, Mike (played by Channing Tatum), as he works his many odd jobs in the hopes of one day having enough money to be able to open his own hand made furniture company - his one true passion. During his anything but monotonous routine of working construction, stripping and sleeping with women he takes on the job of babysitter to 19 year old 'the kid'.
Mike and the kid meet at a construction site and it becomes very clear early on that the kid has no direction. His skills are lacking and if it wasn't for his supportive and stable sister he would not have a roof over his head. When the kid gets involved with stripping he goes from couch potato to living the good life quickly. But even quicker he goes from living high on the hog to finding himself in trouble.
For a movie about stripping, there was a surprisingly entertaining story line. Of course, it wasn't as well developed as it could have been as the bulk of the movie was taken up with dance routines and acts. And, never being part of the Florida strip club scene, I can't say how accurate the movie was, but it seemed a little far fetched to me - with the kids easy entrance into a stripping career and the gorgeous beach front home Mike lived in given his array of odd jobs. However, despite the storyline flaws, the movie was very entertaining and enjoyable. A great movie to see with you girlfriends!
